CATALOG DESCRIPTION:


A final course for graduate students in speech-language pathology; review of current issues and trends in the profession and preparation for professional employment. Prerequisites: This course is offered to CDI graduate students who have completed all basic courses required for the graduate program

 

PURPOSE:

This course is designed to prepare graduate students for entry into professional employment.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completing this course students will be able to demonstrate1;

 

A.

knowledge of types of professional certification/licensure, renewal requirements, and continuing education issues 1

 

B.

knowledge of employment and supervisory requirements and application procedures (7),

 

C.

knowledge of contemporary legislation/litigation affecting the profession (7,8),

 

D.

knowledge of establishment, organization, administration, and evaluation of speech-language-hearing services in the school (3,8),

 

E.

knowledge of ASHA and other professional organizations, and the ASHA Code of Ethics (7).

INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES:


Classroom lecture and group discussion/reflection with fellow students, the instructors and consultant professionals from the community, the university and the department - student participation is required. The focus of these activities will be the extension and refinement of students' awareness of their obligations for service delivery, continuing education, knowledge of the standards of learned societies and the standards for professionalism.

 

FIELD, CLINICAL AND/OR LABORATORY EXPERIENCES:



None.

 

RESOURCES:

Facilities of the MSU Diagnostic and Remediation Center, audio, video and textual resources in the Department of Special Education materials room and the Waterfield Library, College of Education ATCOM Laboratory.

 

GRADING PROCEDURES:


Student participation in the professional seminar is required will be included among other performance assessments in the student's final grade for CDI 621 and/or CDI 676.

 

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

Class attendance and participation are required, and grades may be adjusted to reflect noncompliance.

 

ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY:


Any instance of academic dishonesty will result in a failing grade for the course and may result in further disciplinary action by Murray State University
